This species prefers to feed on tree sap and rotten fruit.
This butterfly can be found in woodland habitats but also parks, suburbs, and riparian areas.
Females lay their eggs in groups around tree branches and the caterpillars feed gregariously in constructed webs in trees.
This butterfly can be seen from February through October but the peak flight period is June and July.
This butterfly overwinters in Iowa as an adult so it can be seen very early in the spring on a warm day looking for tree sap.
